Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Science and Technology, Dr. Elizabet Obot has called on female journalists to always rise to protect the image and integrity of female political office holders in their reportage, especially when the male folks try to pull them down because of gender disparity.
The commissioner made the call when Executive Members of Nigerian Union of Female Journalists (NAWOJ) led by the state chairman, Comrade Uduak Ekong paid her a courtesy visit in her office at Science and Technology Ministry complex Obio Imo.
She however decried a situation where some self acclaimed journalists in the state especially from the local media, send out unfounded information to the public to undermine the integrity of public office holders in the society.
Obot stated that her ministry is well positioned to complement the vision of the Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel for the state, especially in the area of industrialization which is the main stay of the present administration.
“The ministry of Science and Technology under my watch is well positioned to run with the industrialization vision of the state Government, in the area of bringing in industries and getting them established, springing up cottage industries in the state and the likes.” She maintained.
The commissioner who reasoned that Nigeria as a country needs a system that is technologically driven mentioned that economy diversification was needed to boost the country’s IGR.
“Two other sectors that would boom in Nigeria apart from oil are; Agriculture and Science/Technology. Nigeria needs to use Science and Technology to boost IGR. It is very wrong that we have always run a consumer economy where we depend on other countries for almost everything; even tooth picks and toilet papers.
“These are the kind of things we should be able to produce and it is a function of Science and Technology ministry.” Obot stressed.
She however boasted that the ministry in the state under her watch had achieved a lot within the last few months, hinting that it has some approved center, well equipped for the computer based external examinations in the country, including JAMB, WAEC etc. where over 250 candidates were accommodated in recent exams.
Obot expressed hope for the Science Park project which was initiated by the administration of Obong Victor Attah in the state, saying that the project which has been so dear to the people of the state, especially the youths occupies a good space on the priority list of the present administration.
She therefore called on the people of the state to exercise patience with the state Governor over such projects as he is battling with paucity of funds to implement projects and satisfy the yearnings of the people.
Speaking, the state chairman of the organization, Uduak Ekong expressed her gratitude to the Commissioner for obliging them the visit.
The association according to her had been in existence for 26 years and had as its obligations fighting societal ills, accountability advocacy and celebration of excellence.
She stated that the present executive of the group in the State decided to identify with important personalities in society, inform them of their existence and seek collaborations through courtesy visits. Their visit she stressed was to congratulate the Honorable Commissioner on her appointment, show solidarity and request for collaborative arrangements where necessary to help both parties achieve set objectives.
