As the crude oil prices continue to dwindle in the international market, the need to diversify the economy to other areas including agriculture, solid minerals and other sectors have been elevated to the front burner.
Towards this end, The Sun Publishing Nigeria limited in partnership with the Akpabioism Centre for Leadership Development (ACLD), Akwa Ibom State has concluded plans to stage a mega fair tagged: Security\Infrastructure Summit.
Speaking in an interview in Uyo, the State capital, the Chancellor of the Centre, Mr. Bassey James, explained that the fair became necessary to showcase the rich human and material resources that abound in the South-South and Southeast regions of Nigeria.
Billed for April, the summit, according to James, himself a security expert, aimed at bringing to the fore the essential natural resources in the areas of mining, crude oil, gas, agriculture, manufacturing, telecommunication, textiles, commerce, banking and the expertise that could harness such potentials for national development.
Besides, the security chief, who condemned wanton killings in the botched rerun elections in Rivers and Bayelsa States, disclosed that the forum would congregate security experts who would inculcate in the people the culture of peace, unity and togetherness as the needed panacea for growth in the regions.
“The recent political killings in Rivers and Bayelsa State over election matters does portend any good for the region”, he stressed and called on traditional and political leaders to rise up against divisive tendencies as the nation march into the new era.
He frowned at the destruction of vital national installations including maritime and oil thefts, oil pipeline vandalism, cultism, armed robbery, militancy and other violent crimes, noting such national malaise jeopardize the unity, peace and development of the country.
Describing such vices as a threat to the unity and harmony in Nigeria, the Chancellor assured that forum would work with the academia, civil society organizations and other agencies to impress on the restive youths to work towards defending the essential national values instead of destroying them.
The summit, he added, would also impress it on the Federal Government, the Governors, National Assembly members and other participants to address the poor state of roads in Southern Nigeria to enhance free flow of goods and services across the States in the two geo-political zones.
Major highlight of the fair would be the inauguration of the Centre.
